Kick-off

Paula teaches a Speech Class at high school. At the beginning of the lesson, she explains the project they are working on. Benedict is one of her students. He talks about what they do in speech class and how useful it is. What do you think students learn in Speech Class? Write down some key words and then watch this mini movie.

Paula: Oh. All right, so today we are working on persuasive communication, correct? You’ve already had a wonderful opportunity to design your own product and sell it, and now you have the opportunity to design yourself – your future self. So now we are going to plan our futures and plan for a job interview.

So these are all of the notes that we had yesterday. You’re going to research. You’re gonna take notes and when you research, you’re researching about a trade or profession that you would like to go into. And I’ve had some very interesting questions about “Would it be OK if I did this?” or “Would it be OK if I did that?” And so you’re really on the ball and have great ideas with what you’re looking for!

So we’re going to be – in the next few class periods – working on a résumé, and that means you are projecting your future self. That means that you know what the profession you’re going into requires for any type of training or education or experience. And then you also know that you need to sell yourself. So, you’re going to have your name at the top of the résumé – and I know some of you have already started working on these projects, or have done this in other classes and that’s fantastic – but now you get to imagine your future self.

So, you start with your name and then your objective. So you’re going to obtain whatever employment it is that you would like to do – your dream job, your dream career – and then you’re gonna summarize yourself. You’re gonna describe yourself generally with lots of powerful information. And when I say powerful information that’s what’s gonna have a-, a boss or a company or a panel of people who are interviewing you want to hire you and you and you and you.

So we have lots of nice opportunities, right? OK, so take your belongings and go and work on computers. I’ll be checking.

Benedict: Uh so, I’m Benedict Schultz. I’m in 9^th grade – a Freshman. Uh … We usually take Speech Class Freshman or Sophomore year and it’s required to pass high school so you need to take Speech Class if you wish to graduate. Uh, in Speech Classes we do all types of speeches. We do Powerpoints. We use technology and a-, we do impromptu so you need to think 10 minutes, write a speech and be ready to present it.

And right now we’re working on a career interview – mock interview, I guess. And that’s basically where we choose a career we wanna pursue. So for me corporate lawyer, something like that, and she gives us three questions that we should prepare for and we need to write a résumé for it so it’s very applicable to real life scenarios. And … uh, we get three other questions after that that you don’t know. So it incorporates the aspect of preparing for speeches and also thinking on the fly for speeches. So that’s what we’re doing today.

Work in groups of 4. Each person is to prepare a 2-minute speech. It can be informative (giving people information) or persuasive (trying to get people to do something). Practise in pairs first. Choose one of the following topics:

The perfect teacher
The perfect job
